๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ”ฌ The Story of Tempus

Tempus is a Chicago success story. The company was founded here, is headquartered here, and houses 2,500 employees.

Today, Tempus has a valuation of over $8B, making them the largest clinical and molecular dataset platform thatโ€™s right here in our backyard.

Letโ€™s take a look at how they got here:

The Genesis of Tempus

  • Eric Lefkofsky started Tempus after a family member was diagnosed with breast cancer.

  • He noticed the lack of data-driven decision-making in their treatment and was determined to change this.

  • The initial vision was to harness big data and AI to provide personalized treatment plans for cancer patients, aiming to improve patient outcomes through data-driven insights.

Types of Data

At its core, Tempus is a technology company that aggregates and analyzes clinical and molecular data. The Tempus platform integrates various types of data, including:

  • Clinical Data: EHR, physician notes, and treatment histories.

  • Molecular Data: Genomic sequencing data, which includes DNA, RNA, and proteomics (Northwestern has the largest proteomics institute in the country)

  • Imaging Data: Radiology and pathology images.

By combining these data sources, Tempus creates a comprehensive profile of each patient, enabling doctors to make more informed treatment decisions.

Why This Matters

Tempus has revolutionized precision medicine by leveraging big data and AI to create personalized treatment plans, significantly improving patient outcomes.

The future of Tempus holds promise as it continues to innovate and expand its capabilities, setting new standards in the medical field and solidifying Chicago's position as a hub for medical innovation.

I expect weโ€™ll continue seeing more future founders coming from the Tempus ecosystem, which will be great for our overall innovation economy.
